Biography

Monika Kryemadhi is a prominent Albanian politician and Member of Parliament. She served as the leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI), now rebranded as the Freedom Party of Albania (PL), from July 2017 to July 2022, making her the first woman to lead a major political party in Albania.

Her political career began in 1991 as a co-founder of FRESSH (Eurosocialist Youth Forum of Albania), where she served as Secretary General and later President. A member of the Socialist Party until 2004, she was elected to the Parliament of Albania (2001-2005) and the Tirana Municipal Council. In 2004, she co-founded the LSI. As party leader, she led the LSI into opposition after its coalition with the Socialist Party ended. .

She is the former spouse of Ilir Meta, former President of Albania, and notably refused the role of First Lady, delegating it to her daughter to continue her active political career. She continues to be an active Member of Parliament, currently representing Fier
